I've been noticing that while more and more poets seem to be embracing the idea of letting poems go where they may and perhaps even making use of collage more (both of which are largely good things), the negative side effect of this is a lot of poems that while they have series of interesting pairings of images or ideas a couple of times in the poem often feel quite unsatisfactorily put together. To me this seems largely to be due to inattention to sound and rhythm and inattention to the interactions between the connotative resonances of lines. Anyway, I would be interested to hear your ideas on why certain “disjointed”(for lack of a better word) poets are successful while others are not.
